Dhaka University has announced the closure of all classes and examinations until December 6 following the recent earthquake and ongoing aftershocks, prioritizing student safety amid concerns over structural risks in residential halls.
The decision was taken at an emergency virtual meeting of the university’s Syndicate on Saturday, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan.
The meeting included Syndicate members as well as senior officials from medical faculty, Dhaka Medical College, Planning and Development Office, Examination Office and Engineering Division.
BUET experts and university engineers advised that residential halls require comprehensive inspection, risk assessment and possible repairs before they can safely house students again.
To facilitate this, the Syndicate ordered that all halls be vacated by 5 PM on Sunday.
While academic activities remain suspended, Dhaka University offices will continue operating as usual.
