Police have filed a case against 2,200 unidentified people after four shrines were attacked, vandalized, and set on fire in Homna upazila of Cumilla following loudspeaker announcements on Thursday morning.
Homna Police Station Sub-Inspector Tapas Kumar Sarkar registered the case late Thursday night, confirmed the Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafikul Islam on Friday.
The unrest broke out on Wednesday (17 September) morning when a local youth, Mohsin, wrore a post on Facebook, hurting religious sentiments. The post triggered protests, with residents demanding his arrest. Police detained Mohsin the same day, and a case was filed against him by Islami Jubo Sena’s Homna upazila unit. He was later sent to jail.
Despite the arrest, tensions escalated. On Thursday around 9 am, angry crowds gathered in Asadpur after announcements over loudspeakers and attacked four shrines—Kofil Uddin Shah, Hawali Shah, Kalai Shah, and Abdu Shah. Police and army personnel intervened to control the situation, and additional forces remain deployed.
Locals reported a tense atmosphere, with many men leaving the area fearing arrests. Families of victims expressed frustration over the lack of security, saying they lost homes and valuables in the arson.
Police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved, and the situation is now under control.
