Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus left Doha, Qatar, on Friday morning to attend the funeral of Pope Francis in Vatican City. He departed Hamad International Airport at 9:25 a.m. local time (12:25 p.m. Bangladesh Standard Time) and is expected to arrive in Rome at 2:15 p.m. Central European Summer Time. Upon arrival, he will be received by the Bangladeshi ambassadors to Italy and the Holy See.
Prof. Yunus, who was in Qatar for the Earthna Summit and meetings with Qatari leadership, will pay his respects at St. Peter’s Square, where Pope Francis' body lies in state. He is scheduled to attend the funeral Mass on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m. local time.
Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, due to a stroke and subsequent cardiac arrest at his residence in Domus Sanctae Marthae, Vatican City . In accordance with his wishes for simplicity, his funeral will be modest, featuring a single wooden coffin and omitting traditional papal titles . He will be interred at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, a site of personal devotion.
The funeral is expected to draw over 200,000 attendees, including more than 130 international delegations . Notable figures such as former U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Prince William are among the dignitaries present.
Prof. Yunus is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on Sunday, April 27, departing Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport at 8:00 a.m. local time (12:00 p.m. Bangladesh Standard Time), with an expected arrival in Dhaka early Monday morning.
