On Monday, April 14, 2025, Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts hosted the colorful 'Ananda Shobhajatra' (Joyful Procession) to celebrate the Bengali New Year 1432. This annual event, which began at 9:00 AM, is a significant cultural tradition in Bangladesh, symbolizing unity and the rich heritage of the Bengali people.
The procession commenced from the Faculty of Fine Arts and proceeded through Shahbagh, TSC, the Central Shaheed Minar, the Physical Education Centre, and Doel Chattar, before returning to its starting point. This year's theme, 'Harmony of the New Year, End of Fascism', highlighted messages of solidarity and resistance against oppression.
Participants included representatives from 28 ethnic communities, various educational institutions, social and cultural organizations, and both local and international guests. The parade featured 21 motifs of varying sizes, including traditional symbols such as tigers, hilsa fish, and palanquins. Notably, a watermelon motif was included to express solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine, reflecting current global concerns.
To ensure the safety of participants and spectators, the university authorities installed CCTV cameras and archways throughout the campus. Additionally, help desks, a control room, and a temporary medical camp were set up in front of the TSC.
Originally initiated in 1989 by the Faculty of Fine Arts as the 'Mangal Shobhajatra' (Auspicious Procession), the event has evolved over the years. Now known as the 'Ananda Shobhajatra', it has become a universal festival embraced by people from all walks of life, reflecting the dynamic nature of Bengali culture.
The 'Ananda Shobhajatra' has become a central attraction in Pohela Boishakh celebrations, symbolizing the spirit and traditions of the Bengali people.
