Allegations were brought against teachers of a Qawmi madrasa of installing CCTV cameras, including night vision cameras, in the female dormitories in Sharsha upazila of Jashore.
Police in a drive this morning seized 16 such CCTV cameras, monitors, and other equipment from the madrasa after a guardian complained about the matter to the Jashore superintendent of police.
At the time, Abu Taher 45, a teacher, was briefly detained for questioning.
Jashore Additional Superintendent of Police Nishat Al Nahian said two teachers reside on the ground floor at a five-storey building of a madrasa in the upazila and the female students stay on the remaining four floors.
"Night vision cameras were installed in every dorm. The video footage could be monitored from a teacher's room," said Nahian.
A female police officer was sent to seize them, he added.
"There is a record of one month's footage. Necessary actions will be taken after verifying them," he added.
The police officer said the installation of cameras in female dorm rooms were a violation of privacy of the students. "No one has the right to do this."
Following the complaint, a raid was conducted at the madrasa, he said.
Sharsha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kazi Najib Hasan led the drive.
Police took a madrasa teacher into custody for questioning but later released him.
The principal of the madrasa is absconding since the incident.
Police said there are 100-150 female residential students at the madrasa.
