In a major development in the ongoing investigation into crimes against humanity during the July–August uprising, the prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has requested the home ministry to initiate red notices through Interpol against 10 former ministers and advisers from the previous Awami League regime.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam disclosed the move today during a briefing with journalists at his office, saying that the individuals named in the request face multiple charges related to alleged crimes against humanity committed during the unrest.
The accused include Obaidul Quader, former minister of Road Transport and Bridges; Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former home minister; AKM Mozammel Haque, former minister of Liberation War Affairs; Hasan Mahmud, former foreign minister; and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, a senior Awami League leader and former state minister.
Also named are Dr Arafat (A Arafat), former state minister for Information; Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation and former MP; Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former defence and security adviser to the prime minister; Nasrul Hamid Bipu, former state minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources; and Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, former education minister.
The ICT's request seeks international assistance in locating and facilitating the extradition of the accused, several of whom are believed to be residing abroad.
