Teachers, students and employees of Jagannath University (JnU) have launched the "March for Palestine" towards the embassies of the United States and Saudi Arabia in solidarity with the people of Gaza.
The march began around 10:00am from the university campus, but was stopped by police in Tantibazar area.
Police requested the protesters to return to campus, citing the ongoing SSC examinations which began today.
Following the request, the protesters returned to the campus.
Upon their return, a brief rally was held in front of the Language Martyr Rafique Building, where teachers, students, staff, and leaders from various student organisations delivered speeches.
A delegation, led by Prof Dr Mohammad Billal Hossain, later submitted memorandums to the embassies of the United States and Saudi Arabia in Dhaka, as well as to the foreign affairs adviser.
Nur Nabi, joint convener of the Bangladesh Democratic Student Council's JnU unit, said, "The Muslim world remains silent. Many of its leaders act like agents of Mossad. From Bangladesh, we declare -- we boycott you. Western leaders preach humanity, yet perpetuate fascism and mass murder. They must be held accountable."
Rakib, president of the JnU unit of the Student Rights Council, urged the interim government to impose an official boycott on Israeli products. He added, "If the government fails to do so, the people will take action themselves. At the same time, we must prepare a skilled workforce to create alternatives to Israeli goods."
Riazul Islam, secretary of the JnU unit of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, has called on the Muslim youth to act.
Himel, a leader of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal, commented, "The so-called peacekeeping United Nations, OIC, and Western powers remain silent -- this silence has emboldened Israel."
Professor Dr Rois Uddin, general secretary of the JnU Teachers' Association, said, "The United States is the main patron of Israel's genocide."
The event was attended by members of various campus-based social organisations, political student groups, and journalists.
