At least 50 people, including law enforcers and garment workers, were injured during a clash between agitating workers and joint forces in Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila this afternoon.The clash erupted around 12:00pm and continued for nearly three hours in the Aukhabao area of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
At least 10 among the injured are law enforcement officers, and the injured have been taken to various nearby hospitals for treatment.
Confirming the incident, Mehedi Islam, senior assistant superintendent of police in Narayanganj, said 10 individuals have so far been detained in connection with the clash. However, their identities could not be confirmed immediately.According to police and local sources, at least 120 workers of Robintex (Bangladesh) Ltd, an export-oriented garment factory located in Bhulta area, were terminated ahead of Eid.
In protest of this termination, the workers gathered in front of the factory this morning for the third day today.
When members of the joint forces attempted to disperse the protesters from the area, the situation escalated into a clash.
